Each year, the Friends of Greenwood host an auction, the proceeds of which benefit the Tuition Assistance program. Auction items are donated by parents, staff, and local businesses in the community.

Do you love to knit or to bake cakes? Do you have a valuable skill or trade? We all have some talent we can share, so why not share it while helping out others in need? On May 4th the Friends of Greenwood (FOG) will hold its spring fundraising auction to benefit the Greenwood School tuition assistance program. The Greenwood tuition assistance program benefits both Greenwood families as well as Greenwood teachers who need to take continuing education courses as part of their certification requirements. Last year's auction raised more than $5,000, and we are hoping to have another successful auction in 2013! We will be requesting auction items from businesses in the community, however, the bread and butter of these events are the special items donated by parents of the school. Below are some examples of potential auction items:
- Knitting Classes
- Photography Session
- A Decorated Cake
- A Gourmet Dinner for Four
- 4 hours of Babysitting
- (Insert your talent here)
Last year some particularly talented parents donated landscaping services, financial consulting, and graphic design services. But let's face it; we can't all be that talented. Let's say you rack up the frequent flyer miles from all of your "business" trips to Tahiti. Why not donate your miles for round-trip airfare? That way we can couple your miles with someone else's vacation home! Every item or service you donate is wonderful! Some items will stand alone, others we will combine.
Also, in addition to considering donating something to the auction yourself, please think about asking your local wine shop, favorite restaurant or hotel/B&B, auto dealership, bookstore or other shopping establishment for a donation. This is a great way to support Greenwood! Here are some examples of the donations that parents solicited for recent auctions:
- Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center tickets
- Washington Nationals baseball tickets
- Week at a Rehoboth Beach house
- Panera bread for a year certificate
- Yoga classes
- Whitetail Learn to Ski/Snowboard Packages
Finally, please think about talking to your friends and family to solicit donations from them. Maybe your parents have a week at their time share to donate or your sister can donate a gift card. All donations are tax deductible. Everyone's a winner!
Please email firstname.lastname@example.org if you, a friend, or family member wishes to donate an item or service. FOG will provide the donor with a letter confirming the donation that will serve as a receipt for tax purposes.
If you would like to input the information for your donation, or solicited donation, into the auction catalog system, that would be a big help to us. The solicitation input form is available at http://tinyurl.com/fogauction2013 .
Thank you for all of your help in making the 2013 auction another successful one!
HOW THE AUCTION WORKS
The Silent Auction will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, 2013. Everyone who wishes to bid on auction items will use their ticket number as their bidding number. For ease in checkout, two or more people planning to pay together may use one number.
Bid sheets are displayed in each section. Please print clearly your bidding number and the amount you wish to bid on the first available blank line on the bid sheet. Each new bid must be in round dollar amounts. Once bids are made, they may not be crossed out. Each bid increase must be equal or exceed the minimum increment set forth to constitute a valid bid. If a minimum bid is not made, that silent auction bid will be disqualified. Alterations to bids, quantities or prices for any item can only be made by an Auction Committee Member.
3. SECTION CLOSINGS
Sections will close at spaced intervals. Closing times are posted at each section. As each section closes, bidding for that section will stop. Auction Committee Members will then highlight the winning bidder on each bid sheet. Disagreements as to the winner of an item, ties, and other outstanding questions will be settled by an Auction Committee Member. All decisions of the Auction Committee Member are final.
After the final section has closed and the bid sheets have been processed, winning bidders will redeem their bids at the checkout table. Bidders must be present at checkout time to claim winning bids, or have designated someone (upon registration) to collect their items and make their payment. Payment in full is required before items may be collected. You may pay by cash or check payable to Friends of Greenwood.
5. TAX DEDUCTIONS
If you pay more for an item than the estimated value of the item, as per the catalog listing for that item, you may claim as a tax deduction the amount paid above the value listed; please consult your tax professional for advice.
6. ALL SALES FINAL
All items have been donated. All sales are final, and everything is sold "as is". Friends of Greenwood, Inc. and Greenwood School bear no responsibility should any donated item or service be unsatisfactory or invalid due to a lack of availability during your schedule or changes in operations.
7. ITEM RESTRICTIONS
All effort to indicate any restrictions on items has been made but it is the responsibility of the high bidder to verify all restrictions.
We want to get the word out to all the parents, friends, families, coworkers and others so we can make this a successful auction. Please send out the ANNOUNCEMENT text along with the URL to people you know. Encourage everyone to attend!
